Curtains vs Blinds - Which should you choose?

Updated: 2 days ago

Ah yes, the great window dressing debate. Curtains or blinds? Soft and swooshy, or neat and tidy? The answer, frustratingly (and helpfully), is: it depends. But don’t worry — we’ll break it down without making you lie on the floor staring at your windows in despair.

Curtains: The Drama Queens (In a Good Way)

Curtains bring warmth, softness, and a sense that a room has been properly finished. They’re excellent for:

  • Adding insulation (goodbye, draughts)

  • Improving acoustics

  • Making a space feel cosy, elegant, or downright grand

They’re also brilliant if you like a bit of personality at your windows. From relaxed wave headings to full swags and tails, curtains know how to make an entrance — and they do it effortlessly.

Best for: Living rooms, bedrooms, period properties, and anywhere you want a bit of wow (or a lot of warmth).

Blinds: The Tidy Overachievers

Blinds are sleek, practical, and very good at minding their own business. They’re ideal when you want:

  • Precise light control

  • A clean, uncluttered look

  • Something that fits neatly within the window

They’re especially popular in kitchens and bathrooms, where steam and splashes are part of daily life. Blinds are the sensible shoes of the window world — not flashy, but very reliable.

Best for: Kitchens, bathrooms, modern spaces, and windows that don’t want too much fuss.

These blinds were the first time in under 40 years I didn't mirror the pattern. My client wanted to be able to see all the cartoon images when the blinds were up...( I agree!) a pattern that cute should be shown off!

Or… Both (Yes, Really)

Here’s the secret we love sharing: you don’t always have to choose. Blinds and curtains together are a dream team. Blinds handle privacy and light control, while curtains add softness, luxury, and warmth.

Think of it as layers — like a good outfit. Practical underneath, fabulous on top.

So, Which Should You Choose?

Ask yourself:

  • Do you want cosy or crisp?

  • Drama or discretion?

  • Soft elegance or smart simplicity?

And remember, windows are rarely identical, houses aren’t perfect, and that’s exactly why made-to-measure soft furnishings exist. What works beautifully in one room might not suit another — and that’s where expert advice (and a good cup of tea) comes in.

Whether you lean towards curtains, blinds, or a happy combination of both, the right choice is the one that suits your home, your lifestyle, and how you want the room to feel.

And if you’re still undecided? Don’t worry — that’s our favourite place to start
